Welcome to the Paradise Family’s Travel Blog

We are curious travelers who want to learn about ourselves and the world through travel. We like to share lots of travel tips and inspiration as well as ideas for destinations and world-schooling. In August of 2017 we are casting off from our life in Boulder, Colorado to travel around the world: Nepal, China, New Zealand, Thailand, Costa Rica and Italy. We are adventurous vegan eaters while still sampling the local specialties. Kids learn more about the world and their surroundings from interaction rather than from reading about it in a book. Connect with us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Kancha Sherpa: The Spirit of Namche Bazaar

At 85 years old, he is a bit of a local legend.  We gathered around the dining room's "chimney" to warm up with some story time from grandfather.  The kids were into it.  This was road schooling at its best: learning from the source something that cannot be taught in a classroom.

Ten Tips for Trekking in Nepal with Kids

Now twenty-plus years later, we actually took our three kids ages nine, ten and twelve, trekking for more than fourteen days and up over 15,000 ft. along the SoluKhumbu, or Everest, region.

Sherpa Homestays

All this time without connectivity, mirrors, stores or roads is some of what Will and I were hoping from this gift of a year away.  The daily simplicity of our Sherpa home is what so many Americans crave.

Roadschooling: Music lessons in Kathmandu

Lugging the guitar, cello, violin and viola from San Francisco to Kathmandu felt crazy but maybe not more crazy than everything else we are attempting.

Lorna’s Take on Kathmandu

Chai all day every day. In Boulder we had chai (of course!) but not like here. You wake up in the morning and you're greeted with a hot cup of chai. You come to lunch, you are offered chai. You are told there is popcorn upstairs, and you are offered chai along with your popcorn.

Kathmandu: The First Few Days

Our first day, we went to Boudanath Stupa, then got caught in a downpour, followed by a muddy rush hour traffic.  With no lane lines or stop lights, it's a cross between a rugby scrum and a game of chicken.

Singapore

Singapore Surprise: First stop in Asia

The architecture is the most futuristic I've ever seen - pools on top of hotels, 50th floor connecting walkways - while still feeling like you're in the jungle with orchid-filled trees along the expressways and living walls of greenery both inside and outside of buildings.

Itinerary of “The Big Trip”

August / September - Nepal will probably be a time for connecting with our Nepali friends, service work, trekking and homeschooling. March / April – Costa Rica. We plan to ground ourselves in Nosara for two months.  Ideally, we will become fluent in Spanish, howler monkey and surfing.

Wading Through the World’s Biggest Vinyl Market in Utrecht

Although women account for about half of all recording artists in the world, we are vastly outnumbered when it comes to record buyers. At least, this is the impression I got staring at an ocean of men dressed in dark colours, jeans and hoodies at the Mega Record Show, the world’s largest record fair, in Utrecht, Netherlands, in November 2016. In my nonscientific survey of the 41,000-square-foot fair, women seemed to represent maybe 10 percent of this ocean.

These overwhelmingly obsessive dudes, sometimes without any other outlet for their love, would turn out to be some of the most passionate men I’d ever meet.
